History of the Cadet Corps

The Guards Cadet Company was founded by the late Major Harold V.E.G. Blackman, CD in September 1965. Our second Commanding Officer was Major Guy Fotier, CD; both of whom were former Regimental Sergeant Major of the affiliated unit. It was formed under the sponsorship of the Governor General’s Foot Guards Regiment and has continued to find its home with the regiment ever since.

Due largely to the hard work of a former Commanding Officer, Major Robert Barrette, CD, the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa was brought on board as our sponsor in the late 1990’s. We also retain affiliation with both Branch 595 (Strathcona) and Branch 426 (Eastview) of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The cadet corps has since this time also maintained a highly active Parent Support Committee, consisting of parents of our current cadets, and volunteers from the community at large who value the cadet program. This committee is essential in ensuring the goals of the program are achievable through their financial and personnel support.

We are proud to continue to offer this valuable program to the young people of Ottawa, and expect from them a service to the community that is second to none.
