PROMOTIONS

Rank promotion criteria

Note: Until further notice, cadets will not be required to complete an annual Cadet Fitness Assessment to be promoted. Any changes to this policy will be communicated through the chain of command.

These criteria reflect the minimum prerequisites for promotion to each rank. Promotions are not automatic, and are awarded based on merit. Additional factors that are considered include:

  • dress and deportment;

  • conduct, discipline, and attitude;

  • participation;

  • response to direction;

  • ability to interact positively and comfortably with others;

  • ability to make sound judgements regarding one’s own actions;

  • willingness to accept responsibility;

  • ability to solve problems effectively;

  • ability to communicate effectively;

  • ability to set a positive example for others; and

  • initiative.

Promotion to Guardsman (Gdsm)

  • Enrolled in the cadet program for a minimum period of 5 months.

  • Note: the rank of Guardsman is specific to Foot Guards regiments. In most army cadet units, this rank is known as Lance Corporal (LCpl).

Promotion to Corporal (Cpl)

  • Hold rank of Gdsm,

  • Successfully completed Green Star level training program, and

Promotion to Master Corporal (MCpl)

  • Completed at least 6 months of service at the rank of Cpl, and

  • Successfully completed Red Star level training program.

Promotion to Sergeant (Sgt)

  • Completed at least 6 months of service at the rank of MCpl,

  • Successfully completed Silver Star level training program, and

  • Achieved a minimum of “completed without difficulty” in PO 303 (Leadership).

Promotion to Colour Sergeant (CSgt)

  • Completed at least 6 months of service at the rank of Sgt,

  • Successfully completed Gold Star level training program, and

  • Achieved a minimum of “completed without difficulty” in PO 403 (Leadership).

  • Note: the rank of Colour Sergeant is specific to Foot Guards regiments. In most army cadet units, this rank is known as Warrant Officer (WO).

Promotion to Master Warrant Officer (MWO)

  • Completed at least 6 months of service at the rank of CSgt,

  • Achieved a minimum of “completed without difficulty” in PO 503 (Leadership), and

  • Identified as a successful candidate through the merit review board process.

Promotion to Chief Warrant Officer (CWO)

  • Completed at least 6 months of service at the rank of MWO, and

  • Identified as a successful candidate through the merit review board process.
